When Mr E. E. McCarthy, senior magistrate at Christchurjji, retires at the end of January, his pmee will be slier) bv Mr H. Y. Widdowscn, of Dunedin; Mr J. B. Bartholomew will take Mr Widdowson s place as senior Magistrate in Dunedin; and Mr H. W. Bundle will take the. districts previously in charge of Mr Bartholomew. Friends of Mr. TV. Devery, who went to Auckland a few days ago on liolidav will regret to hear that he had yesterday to undergo a serious operation at the Mater Misencoroiue hospital for an internal _ compliant. Information received last nighv stated that his condition was weak, but mat the prospects for his recovery were bright. The death occurred suddenly on Christmas morning, at his residence, Tavistock Road, Lyall Bay, of Mr Finlay Bethune, headmaster or the Newtown School, one of the bestknown and most capable teachers in the Wellington Education Board's district. The late Mr Bethune, who was a’man of active and .athletic nature, was in harness to the last, and was in Ms accustomed place when the Newtown School broke up for the holidays.
The announcement bf the death on Wednesday evening, of Mre J. Walter Bull, will* be received with the deepest regret by her very wide circle of friends. * Following an operation consequent upon a severe illness, complications set It:, resulting m her death. The fate Mrs Bull, whose husband.predeceased her by a few months, leaves a family of one ■ son (Mr Ralph Bull) and two daughters (Misses Phyllis and Merle Bull), and much sympathy will be felt for them and the relatives generally in their bereavement. The deceased lady had been a resident oi Gisborne for the past 25 years, and by her kindly nature had endeared herself to ail who knew her. Mr Henry Stead, who died on the Manama on the voyage from Sail Francisco, was the son of the late William T. Stead, the founder of the English Review or Reviews, who met his death in the Titanic disaster in IT2. Mr ■Henry Stead was born at Darlington, England, on October 31, 1575, educated at University College, London, and for 15 years worked with his father, travL elling all over the world as a journalist. With his father he published thf» Courier de la Conference at The Hague iu French during a former Peace Conference. In his time he enteryiewed President Diaz, cf Mexico, and many other notables. He founded in Melbourne the Review cf Reviews for Australasia.. which subsequently " became Stead's Review.
