ALLEGED SHORT-WEIGHT BREAD. AUCKLAND, Oct, 6. Judge Herdman allowed an appeal by the inspector against the decision of Mr Outton, S.M.. in dismissing the case against _ Walter Buchanan, baker, charged with selling short-weight bread. Defendant had stated, when selling the bread, that it was mot under lib 140 z., and might be 21b, which the magistrate accepted as compliance with the Act/, but Judge Herdman held than the purchaser was entitled to know the true weight of the loaf supplied, and should not be left in any doubt. The case was referred hack to the magistrate. BAND CONTEST AT THAMES THAMES, Oct. 6. The Band Contest has opened. There are eight hands and about two hundred soloists. Results were: Euphonium solo J. Lowe (New Plymouth) 99, E. Beasley (Auckland) Regimental 93; F. A. Clarke (Whakatane) 92. Test Hymn: New Plymouth 90, Dannevirke 89, Hamilton SS. Bass Trombone: A. Hanley (New Plymouth) 89, H. Butchan (Hamilton) So, J. Robinson (Hauraki) 83.
