MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE.
FURTHER DECISIONS. WELLINGTON, Oct. 6. The Municipal Association passed a remit, urging that in future all pigs sold for human consumption shall be killed and inspected at public abattoirs. . In view of Anzac Day coming within a day or two of the municipal elections, it was recommended that the elections should take place on the first Wednesday in May, and that new Councils should take office after that date. It was resolved that power be given to Borough Councils to raise loans by special order, without taking a poll of ratepayers, for the payment of compensation in cases of land taken, dedicated, or purchased for widening streets, debentures issued in respect of such loans to be legal currency for the purpose of such payments, provided that the total amount shall not exceed the sum of £SOOO in one'year. It was also resolved that the Motor Registration Act , 1908, be amended to provide that all registration of motor vehicles shall be renewed annually.—P.A.
The remits passed to-day urged that local authorities should have power to acquire compulsorily any easement required in the construction of a public work, also an increase in fees payable in the third schedule of /the impounding Act, and for increased contributions from the State to funds for fire boards.
The conference protested against the tendency of the Government departments to amend the provision of the statutes affecting local bodies by regulations and Order in Council. It also urged that Borough Councils be given special powers for raising loans without a poll for street widening purposes, and that it be made compulsory to issue competency certificates to all drivers of motor vehicles. The next conference will he held in Christchurch, the date to be fixed by. the executive.—P.A.
