SHEARERS’ AWARDS.
STATEMENT BY MINISTER FOR LABORS “LEGAL AND ENFORCEABLE.” COMPLAINT AGAINST MR SHERRATT TO BE INVESTIGATED. WELLINGTON, Oct. 6. The Minister for Labor was ashed to-day whether he had seen a statement that the shearers’ award applied only to the Wellington province. The Hon. G. J. Anderson replied that he had made a statement two days previously, and he had no reason to alter anything that he had said then. A separate award had been made for each of the districts -.except Nelson and Westland, and he ktfesumed that the, Court had full pfcuver to make them. Mr. GrayndiSr had stated that Mr. Sherratt, of Gjisborne, had attempted, as a representative of the. woolgrowers of Poverty Bay, to coerce the workers to shear lambs at the rate of 17s 6d per hundred. If. there had been any breach of the' matter would he made the subject of inquiry. Copies, not qnly of the Wellington award, but of all the shearers’ awards, had been available in Wellington. All these awards were made prior to the resignation of Mr. McCullough from the Court, and so far as the Department could see, they were legal and enforceable. He had copies of all the awards.—Special.
