“THE MESSIAH.”
TO BE PRODUCED AT XMAS TIME. A well attended meeting was held in the Parish Hall last evening to consider a proposal to render Handel’s oratorio, ‘‘The Messiah” about Christmas time. Mr J. Clirisp was elected t-o the chair. In outlining the proposal, tin* chairman said that there had been no choral effort in Gisborne for some time. During the recent competitions, Mr Sydney Wolf, the musical adjudicator, had paid a compliment to the local talent and it was considered that another effort should he made. He did not suggest that any steps should lie taken at the present time to form a Choral Society, but that they should interest themselves with the production of “The Messiah.” The main question was whether or not they could put the oratorio on before Christinas. He did not doubt but the assistance of the various church choirs Would be forthcoming.
The proposal was favorably received and it was decided to produce “Tlio Messiah” about Christmas time, and to hold a practice meeting next Wednesday evening.
Some discussion resulted over the number of voices to he admitted to the choir* and it was generally considered that about fifty would ho sufficient. It wa*s decided that the selection of the voices should he left in the hands of the committee.
The following committee was appointed:—Messrs M, L. Foster. Geo. Crnwsiinw, E. T. Trowde. E. D. Smith. A. E. Walker, C. V. Havre and ,1. Clirisp (secretary).
