BOROUGH RESERVES.

W 4 IT EAT A PARK HANDED OVER 4 TO RESIDENTS. JOUNCIL TO PLANT TREES AT / ANZAC PARK. Future work in the Borough reserves cropped up in a discussion at the Borough Council last evening, and tribute was paid to the work done by private residents. Cr. Todd said that, as the Council would have noticed, the residents of Whataupoko had decided to take in hand the matter of beautifying Waiteata Park, and had appointed a committee on the same lines as that in Kaiti. They already had £6O in sight and had ordered timber and trees and, if the Council agreed, work would be started next day. The section was an oblong one. It was proposed to plant oaks, chestnuts, and pines, and inside these English birches. The committee expected to do the work in two or three weeks. He asked that the Waiteata committee should lie treated on the same terms as the committee at Kaiti, and that the committee should have control of the area. The committee comprised Messrs F. W. Nolan, F. B. Mander, G. T. Bull. G. W. WilIcck, V. C. Mitford and. the speaker. Cr. Bickford moved that the Committee be given control of the reserve. Cr Ball, in seconding the niotiop, commended Ci - Todd on the good work. He thought the Council should put on record its appreciation of the action of residents ‘who had assisted in. .beautifying the Council’s reserves. They had now three associations working to beautify the town, the Kaiti association. the Waiteata association, and the Waikanae Beach Improvement Society. The Mayor said the land should lie handed over to the committee and at a later date the Council might be able to assist them. Or. Coleman asked if the sum received from the lessee, £26. could not be handed over to the committee for beautifying purposes.

The Mayor said the matter could be discussed at a. later date. Cr. Coleman said the matter had been discussed previously and he thought it was then decided that the rents received from reserves should go back into reserves. ' ' The Mayor said the Council could not legally do tfiat. Ct. Coleman suggested that the money might be ear-marked for reserves. It was decided that the Council should delegate its powers to the committee and that Cr DeCosta should represent the Council on the committee.

Cr. Todd, in returning thanks, said that Mr W. D. Lysnar. M.P., had suggested that a portion might be cut off for a rough play ground for children. The Mayor -said that, while discussing the reserves, lie would like to make mention of Anzac Park. When that ground was under consideration some gentleman bought the land and held it for the Council. That was during Mr Sherratt’s term as Mayor. TRe gentleman had spent about £3OO on the Park. Now they had approached him and said they would like the Council to assist to beautify the Park even to the extent of £SO this year. He suggested that they might spend up to that amount on trees for permanent work. He thought the Council should do what it could to assist the committee. The public also might take up the matter and donate trees or money.

Cr. Todd said the guarantors could have asked the Council for the sum of £3OO but they had not done so. The Council was under the strongest obligation to the committee. He thought it was an excellent idea to plant trees. On the motion of the Mayor it was decided to spend up to £SO in’ planting trees in Anzac Park.

Cr. Bickford suggested that an appeal for trees should be made to tho public.
