FARMERS AND THE STATE
GOVERNMENT URGED TO PRACTISE ECONOMY.
WELLINGTON, July 27. ■Remits urging Government economy In view of the present position and stringency* were moved at the Farmers’ Union Conference by Air. Macpherson (Qamaru), who said the time had conic for reasonable economy, and it was the duty of the Government to reduce, its great expenditure.
Mr. Sheat (Dunsandel) said that in difficult times—in a period of reconstruction —there was a burden to be borne and the farmers must be content to stand their share of it. They were entitled to ask the Government to use the pruning knife in the Civil Service. The Government should begin with its own salaries, which they increased last session. Public officials ought to bo despatched from the service and sent on the land.
A delegate remarked it, would be no great credit to Parliamentarians to reduce their salaries 10 per cent., seeing that they had increased them 60 per cent.
Captain Colbcck (Morrinsville) said the expenditure would have to bo reduced' regardless of the feelings of those who might lose their jobs. The cost of production, could not come down till wages came down. The Government should give a lead. After further discussion the remits were canned.—P.A.
