TE KARAKA NEWS.

Favored with a perfect day, the annual school picnic held in Mr. C. Haronga’s paddock on Thursday, was an unqualified success in every way. An attractive programme of athletic events, added to a plenitude of delectable viands, for which, by 'he way, the ladies of the district have an enviable reputation, more than satisfied the child heart, and sent all home eorrv the day had ended al! too soon. Mr *A. M. Lewis, chairman of the School Committee, in the course of his remarks, paid generous tribute to Mr. Hugh Jackson and Sister Taylor, District Native Nurse, the former donating the Dux Medal,, won by Valmaii Cartwright, and the latter in stimulating the native children to effort by the presentation of four valuable prizes, which were won by Kangi Rum, Dolly Kewa, Hilda Sydney and Maud Ruru. The committee desire to thank Messrs. D. J. Barry and Co., Ltd., for a liberal supplv of soft drinks, which, needless to say, the children thoroughly enjoyed and those ladies and gentlemen, who, by donations and assistance helped to make the function a success. Last week, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Lewis was the scene of a large gathering, met to extend a hearty "welcome home to Mr and Mrs Lionel Lewis, on their return from their honeymoon. Games, dancing and music passed away a very pleasant evening, and at It p.m. it was a happy tliron" that sat down to a sumptuous repast. The usual toasts incidental to such an occasion were enthusiastically honored, more especially those of "The Bride and Bridegroom” and “Ihe i arents ” Set out in the dining room was a fine array of useful and beautiful presents, a testimony to the popularity the young couple are held in the district.— Special.
