Gowland: “Referring to previous correspondence in regard to mail communication between Gisborne and Napier, I have pleasure iu informing you that iu order to provide an “increased service” for the exchange of mail matter overland between Gisborne and Napier, the vehicles of Messrs Wilkinson’s, Ltd., Gisborne, and the Hawke's Bay Motor Co., Ltd., Napier, are to be utilised between Gisborne and Wairoa, and Napier and tYairoa respectively.” It has been stated in commercial circles in Wellington that clause 23 of the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bjll has the effect of repealing the free of income tax provision in relation to war loan debentures now in the hands of investors.' The Prime Minister said last night, in to a question on the point, that the Government had not the least intention of going back on any contract it had made. The effect of the clause in question had been discussed in Cabinet, and he had been assured by the law officers that the clause would not interfere with war loan debentures issued under the free of income tax arrangement.—Special.
