A TRIBUTE TO THE LADY HOCKEYISTS.

The splendid exhibitions of hockey wliic-li have been proceeding for just on a week in Gisborne in connection with the New Zealand Ladies’ Hockey Championship have attracted large* attendances, and the immense gathering which assembled oil the Childers Road deserve yesterday afternoon in particular was amide proof of the keen interest that is being displayed in regard to the struggle for supremacy.. In referring to the championship contests our purpose is merely to pay a deserving tribute to the high-grade sport which is being afforded. One would not wish to witness a finer exhibition than the particular match in question of athleticjsm oil the part of the fair sex. That two teams of young ladies could maintain such a fast and vigorous display of hockey right through a match must have been an “eye-opener” to all who had the privilege of witnessing the struggle. Iu short, the contest was a magnificent test of endurance and skill, which will go far to still further popularise ladies’ hcckey in this district. There have, of course, been other really good contests during the competition but the matph to which reference is being made stood out as one of the keenest and most brilliant ever played in the Dominion. The people of this district should, indeed, feel grateful to the promoters for enabling them to enjoy the splendid games which have characterised the current tourney. Today, when the final will be played between Auckland and Poverty Bay “A-’ there should again be a very large attendance. May the better team win!
