AN ARAB RISING.

REBEL ATTACK ON THE EUPHRATES.

PUNITIVE MEASURES BEING TAKEN.

(Received Julv 75. 7.35 p.m.) LONDON. July 14. In the House of Commons the Hon. Winston Churchill, Minister for War, stated that Arabs on July 2 attacked the Government buildings at Eumaila on the Euphrates, and killed an Arab guard and cut the railway. Reinforcements sent from Basra suffered casualties owing to the cutting of the canal, and were unable to reach the town. Further reinforcements have been sent from Bagdad. Punitive measures are being taken by troops and the air force.

The rising appeared to be of a local character, probably due to a religious agitation. The immediate cause was local sheikhs who had been inciting the tribesmen to rebel. The garrison at Rumaila is still holding out, awaiting assistance from Bagdad. —Reuter.
