TRADE UNION DEMAND DISCUSSED. WITHDRAWAL OF TROOPS. IMPOSSIBLE. r "NOT AN ARMY OF OCCUPATION.” f Unite*'? Press Association—Pony r Vi--.. [ (Received July IG, 1 a. 111.7 I : . LONDON, July 15. ( With regard to the Trade Union Congress resolution in favour of a '.general strike to compel the with- , drawal of troops from Ireland, the Irish Office has issued a statement emphasising- the sole purpose of the troops m Ireland is to assist the civil power to maintain law and order and defend Ireland. They were in no wise an army of occupation. Military law had not, been proclaimed. The mere presence of the troops was found to act as a check on the campaign of outrage. This had been abundantly proved. Responsible Irish opinion - welcomes the intervention of armed forces. It is impossible to withdraw the troops and leave the law abiding majority and peaceful agents of: the civil Government at the mercy of the forces of disorder.—A. and N.Z.C.A. DUBLIN, July 14. I here are. reports that the Sinn Fein 7- 1 nance Department is closing the Kinn Fern loan, and that £295,000 has been subscribed. —A. and N.Z.C.A.
