STATE GOVERNORS.
QUEENSLAND PREMIER’S VIEWS. PRESENT OFFICES SHOULD BE ABOLISHED. LONDON. July 13. Commenting on the appointment of Governor. Air Theodore. Premier of Queensland, said that he had suggested to Lord Alilner shortly after his arrival that no further Governor should be appointed for Queensland, and that the duties of Governor for that State should be carried out by the LieutenantGovernor. Lord Alilner stated that although a change in the system of appointing State Governors for Australia was sure to come sooner or later, his opinion was that the change would not come until there had been a review of the relations between the States and the Commonwealth, or at any rate, until the majority of the States agreed to a change. “I intend.''’ added Air Theodore, "to get the other St’ate Premiers to cooperate with me with a view to abolishing the office of Governor, and to allow'the duties to be carried out. by Lieutenant-Governors appointed upon the recommendations of the State Governments.” The principal justification of the suggested change is to ensure a policy of non-interference with the State Governments. which on certain occasions are seriouslv hindered through the attitude of imperially-appointed Governors imposing their will in matters only affecting local interests. It is considered that such actions lead to a serious curtailment of self-governing rights. A; and N.Z.C.A. *
