April 23. in anticipation of the forthcoming poll on prohibition and the permanent six o’clock closing of hotels in New South Wales the Alliance is organising a forty weeks’ campaign. The State has been divided into areas, to each of which an army of. special speakers and preachers will devote :i week. An important, decision has been # given bv the High Court in eotinecFion with Llie Queensland local option poll in 1917. The poll was taken on ihe same Saturday as the election for tin* Federal Senate, and resulted in favor of a reduction of hotels in certain districts. The point taken was whether the State authorities overrode the Federal law by taking a poll in conjunction with the !'<'dcral elections. The Court held that Federal law is paramount and the poll is invalid. —L. P.A.
