LOG A L ARRANG EAI ENTS

A meeting of those interested in the Peace Celebrations wan held in the Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. The Mayor (Mr. George Wildish) presided. The Mayor said they had met to j make final arrangements for the 1 Peace Celebrations. He read the programme as published, and sug- ! gested that it be adopted. ’ j Mr. H. De Costa said that he 1 thought an advertisement should be inserted in" the Press, urging people to join in the procession. In reference to the luncheon, Mr. De Costa stated that lunch could be provided for 500 soldiers. On the motion of the Mayor, it was agreed to add Colonel Fletcher and Messrs J. N. Bullard and Rangi to the Sports’ Committee. Mr J, W. J. Preston urged that no doubt should be allowed to exist in the public mind regarding the fact that the sport's were free. Colonel Fletcher said that he did not anticipate any doubt of entries —the difficulty lay in the fact". that the events had not been sufficiently advertised. It was agreed that Colonel Fletcher ! and Mr P. Howard should be appointed a committee to make arrangements for the provision of refreshments for competitors. On the motion of Mr S. Dean, seconded by Mr Rowley, it was decided that the Mayor and. Mr. H. De Costa should wait on the restaurant keepers to request them to consider the matter of making some arrangements so that country people could obtain meals. Mr Dean said that in reference to the request for cars to carry . the j children, lie had not met with a l single refusal. After further discussion, it .was agreed that the transport committee meet the headmasters of. the schools on the following afternoon to make final arrangements. The Mayor suggested some arrangement- should be made in case the day turned out to be a wet one, as ho would not like to see a muddle or the children disappointed Ibe children could, in the event of .a wet day. be entertained to dinner in the Garrison Hall and given a .picture show exhibition. He suggested that something should he done in regard to the special care of the very young children. He also thought that the children should be brigaded in schools before tliev left the Park. Mr Rowlev suggested that cars allotted to each school should carry a distinguishing flag. Mr Todd’s suggestion was incorporated in a motion and was carried. Mr Plank offered to supply timber j for signs denoting the various schools in the Park. Mr W. Howard ofFered to paint the Both offers ere accepted with thanks.

SCHOOL CHILDREN’S PICNIC

TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

FOR MONDAY

On Monday, commencing at 11 a.m,. a monster picnic will be held in the Park for the school children of the district, where games will be played and a lengthy sports programme gone through. At the conclusion of the picnic the children will assemble at various allotted spots, each of which will be indicated by a large sign bearing the name of the school. The transport arrangements are as follow:

COUNTRY SCHOOLS

All schools from Ormond to Makaraka (inclusive) will come in by train.

The Ngatapa and Patutahi children will arrive in conveyances arranged by the school committees of those districts, together with a lorry arranged by the Cook County Council.

The Te Arai children will come in in conveyances arranged . by the school committee and also in a lorry arranged by the Cook .County Council.

TOWN SCHOOLS.

Jji connection with the town schools the owners of cars have made a very generous response to the appeals made for transport, and with the aid of the Taxi Drivers’ Association and the use of the tramcars it is hoped that the whole of the children will be able to get out to the grounds in one trip.- To ensure this result any car owners not yet approached but who are willing to offer their services are asked to communicatp with the Town Clerk before 4 p.m. to-day. The arrangements lor the transport of the children of the town schools are as follows, the children assembling at 10 a.m. in each instance :

The Te Hapara and Gisborne Schools children will assemble at the respective schools. * The Kaiti children will meet at the Kaiti school or at the Post Office whichever is most convenient. The Mangapapa pupils will assemble either at Roebuck-road or at the school.

A meeting of the transport committee together with the headmasters of the schools and the chairmen of the school committees will be held m the Borough Council Chambers at 4 p.m. to-day when the allotment of cars and conveyances will be made.

NO ILLUMINATIONS FOR SYD NEY TOWN HALL.

MONEY COULD BE SPENT TO BETTER PURPOSE.

MELBOURNE HOTELS TO BE CLOSED ON SATURDAY.

('.Received July 16 10.46 P-m ) MELBOURNE, July 16. The Federal Cabinet has decided to close the hotels during the Peace Celebrations on Saturday.
