ATHLETIC SPORTS.

NEXT YEAR’S NEW ZEALAND championships.

TO BE HELD IN GISBORNE IN JANUARY.

A very important decision relating to -Gisborne sporting activities was arrived at last week at the conference, held in Wellington,, of delegates from the various centres of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union. This was the securing of tlie New Zealand Athletic Championships for competition next year in Gisborne. The decision was the result of the efforts of Mr. A. E. Davy, \vho attended the conference as representative of the local centre of the Union, and also as a member of the New Zealand Executive. Sgt. A. Elliott also represented Gisborne. •Speaking to a Times representative yesterday, Mr Davy, wlio returned to Gisborne on Tuesday, mentioned that the New Zealand Executive bad promised, pror to the war, that the championships would be held in Gisborne after the war, and at the Conference he had insisted upon the fulfilment of that promise, so that at last Gisborne was getting the championships. They would be held about Jan. 1 and '2, 1920. Mr. Davy added that the holding of the championships here would he a great thing for the district, as nothing of the kind had ever taken place here before. The Union controlled all classes of athletics, including running, jumping, hurdling, piping, dancing, etc., and it was intended to put on a programme in the January championships such as had never before been presented in New Zealand. ■ Mr Davy proposed at the Lontci - ence that the Union should foi'in a reciprocal agreement with the IN e" Zealand Auto Cycle Union, and the delegates to the Conference favored the proposal. As a result, he was given authority to enter into negotiations for such an agreement. Accordingly, on his way back to Upborne lie had called into the luuKlquartors of the A.C.U.. at Damievirke anil presented the proposition to them. The A.C.U. promised, to bring the matter of a reciprocal agreement between the Athletic Gnu and the A.C.U.. at its next .annual meeting, which is to be held in Wei lingturf on August 21. , Th? effect of such an agreement would lie that the two Uiuons would control all sports and there would be an interchange of events on the P grammes arranged by the tv o bodre.• One body would also recognise the other’s disqualifications. \r 7 The next conference of the A./*. Athletic and Cycling Union was fixed for some time m January, _ o held in Gisborne. , , ,• \j ow Mr Davy was re-elected to the Zealand Executive of the Union.
