WAIKOHU COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETINGThe Waikohu County Council met yesterday, there being present: The Chairman TCr. L. B. Tullock), Crs. C. Gaukrodger, C. H. Bridge., R. D. Dymock, and A. A. Fraser. Tlie Woodville County Council forwarded copies of passed by a conference of local bodies held in ‘Woodville on Marqh 26th last, to consider the matter of concrete roads. Or Gaukrodger moved that the Council be represented by Cr. Bridge and the County Engineer at the proposed conference- to be held at Wellington under the auspices of the Counties’ Association. The motion was agreed to. The Royal Insurance Co. write offering to insure the Council against claims for damage under public risk. Tt wag resolved to apply to the different assurance companies asking them to quote rates. The South British Insurance Co. wrote suggesting that the Council should insure its engineer and cleric under personal accident policies. It was decided to ascertain how far these officers are covered by the existing policy, and to thank the company for its suggestion. The Town Clerk, Gisborne, advised that the Borough Council concurs with the Waikohu Council’s suggestion regarding unauthorised expenditure. —The letter was received. Messrs Chrisp and Coleman, on behalf of the East Coast Commissioner, requested that the Council take over and control the road from Motu Falls bridge to th e Waitnngirua homestead. The matter was deferred for discussion with the engineer’s special re-

port. Mr J. W. P rice applied to have a portion of disused road adjoining lfis property closed and vested in him. It- was decided to ask the Public Works Department to have the road closed as requested. Mr F. Sherriff wrote, asking what steps would be necessary for him to get access to his section in the Wharekopae block. It was decided to supply the necessary information.

Mr H. E. Hill, of the Mangapapa Town Board wrote, claiming the sum of £2l 5s lid, being the Council’s share of the cofet of maintaining the Hospital road for 18 months ending March 31st. 1919. It was agreed that payment be made; also decided to ascertain whether patients from Motuhora and the Opotiki County are shown as coming from ‘Waikohu County. J Mr G. L. Evans, secretary of the Cook Hospital Board, asked that the ftrst payment on account of the annual levy he made as soon as possible. . Payment was agreed to be made at

the next meeting. Sir James Allen, acting Prime Minister, and Sir William Fraser, Minister of Public Works, wrote acknowledging the Council’s letters regarding the importance of pushing on railway construction in Poverty Bay district.—The letters were received. The ■ Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald, member for the district, wrote promising to do his best to see that the railways in the district are pushed ahead as expeditiously as possible. It was decided to reply thanking Mr. MacDonald, and to point out that in past years the North Island had received far less than a fair share of public money. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, wrote asking for details of all works for which the council requires provision in year’s estimates. » The engineer gave a list oi grants for which application had been made, the information being required by the district office before the council On 'the motion of Cr. The sanitary inspector’s report was read and adonted. The engineer’s report was read and considered. It was decided to dump the Motuhora. metal at the Ilakauroa crossing and to defer carting it until the spring. It was decided td take over the recently formed road giving access to the Waitangirau sheep station. It was left to Cr Clark to select a roadman’s paddock near. Rakauroa. Only one tender _ was received for i the work of metalling a portion of | the Makaretu road, hut as it was f considered too high, it was declined. The raising of a loan of £BOO for completing the Te Hau and a further loan of £390 for completing Palmer a Bridge, was authorised.
