CRICKET.
WINNERS OF HAWKE CUP. RETURN OF POVERTY BAY TEAM. The Poverty Bay cricket team, which went to Wanganui for the purpose of playing a challenge match with Wanganui for the possession of the Hawke Cup, and succeeded in annexing the trophy, returned to Gisborne by the Arahura yesterday. When the tender drew up alongisde the wharf, the men were met by a number of local enthusiasts. The Deputy Mayor (Mr. H. E. Hill congratulated the members of the team on their success, which proved beyond all doubt that the district could more than hold its own ill sport. Championship honors were held locally in howls and ladies’ hockey, agd now there was the champion second grade cricket team. He hoped the cup would remain in the district for many years, and that its possession miglit also prove to the public the justice of the claims of the cricketers for a new cricket and sports ground. On the call of Mr. Hill, three hearty cheers were given for the winners. The captain of the team (Mr. v\ . Oates) briefly responded, and said that the- cricketers of the district would do their bsst to retain the trophy in this district. Another ceremony took place later in the dav. when the cup was formally handed over by the captam to the Poverty Bav Association. Mr. H. E.
