Bv Telegraph—Special Correspondent. TE KARARA, March 31. It- has fallen to the happy lot of few members of the Police Force to receive such tributes as were . accorded Constable Doyle here to-niglit, the occasion being si public dinner and presentation to him on the eve of his retirement from the Force to go ‘‘on the land.” . The gathering was held in Hundleby’s Hall, and all parts of the Woikolm County sent representatives, whilst in addition a large number of prominent townspeople were also present. Air. A. M. Lewis presided and Constable Doyle sat on his right and Mr. C. H. Bridge on his left. SubInspector Dew was amongst those present. , * Prior to the gathering partaking ol a sumptuous dinner, Constable Doyle was presented with a canteen of cutlery and an illuminated address-. A lengthy list of toasts was gone through, including “The King,’' the “Guest of the Evening,” the “Army and Navy” (coupled with the names of Capt. Poynter and Sergt. Law, “the New Zealand Boys etc., etc. . The chairman, in proposing Constable Dovle’s health, mentioned that Constable Doyle liod been in the district for about 15 years and had proved an efficient ‘ and very fair police official. The fact that there was such a large gathering was evidence or his popularity mid that he had given general satisfaction. Constable Doyle, who had a splendid reception on rising to reply, said that he had been well treated during his residence in the district by all classes of the community. He said that he had never thought that . he had so many friends until that night and he added jocularly that if some Police Inspetcors had happened, to he present that- night they, might probably come to the conclusion that ho had not done liis duty. Sub-Inspector Dew said that he had found him a very capable officer and that the work in Constable Doye’s district had always gone very smoothly.
