MAORI SOLDIERS
RETURN OF PIONEER BATTALION.
MAPOURIKA TO CONVEY THi: TROOPS'FROM AUCKLAND.
The trouble over the non-arrival of the Westmoreland at Gisborne with the Maori troops aboard has beenovercome by the Minister for Defence chartering the Mapourika to convey the men from Auckland to Gisborne. Sir James Carroll states that it is probable the local men will not land at Auckland, but after the Westmoreland had undergone quarantine, the soldiery would go on board the Mapourika and come straight on to Gisborne. The Westmoreland was due on Saturday next, and it was possible the men would arrive here either the following Monday or on the Tuesday, which was the official date of opening the liui. It was proposed that the Urewera,, Wairoa, and all the East Coast natives should also be mobilised here. The following East Coast names appear in the nominal roll of R.D. 228,. on the Westmoreland:
