THE TURF.

Sweet Lady, one of the crack two-year-olds of the present season in Australia, is a half-sister to Grafton Laddie, who ran with moderate success in this country a few seasons back. Desert Gold has been nominated in the Caulfield Clip and Melbourne Cup. Biplane has been also nominated in the Caulfield Cup, but does not figure in the chief event run at FJemington. Borke’s Drift was finishing on strongly at the end of the Ashburton Trotting Cup, and if better placed in the early stage might have seriously troubled Trix Pointer to head him off at tho finish. For -the first time in the history of the race the English Derby was won this year by a lady. The face was run on June 4. and wasi won by Lady J. Douglas’s Gainsborough. "Gainsborough, who recently won the /Two Thousand Guineas, is said to be a perfect sample of the English thoroughbred. He, was bred by his owner, Lady Douglas, a keen sportswoman, and an expert on all matters pertaining to the breeding and raising of race-liorses. She sent Gainsbor- . ough into the sale ring as a yearling, but the, reserve of 2500 guineas was not 2000 guineas being the highest bid and the colt was retained. Winestra, the winner of the Amateur Handicap at Ashburton, is a three-year-old daughter of. the New Zealand Trotting Cup winner Bavensehild. Although Johnny Walker, who ran second in the New Zealand Cup, did not win a race during‘ the season, lie gathered OOOsovs in place money. There arc four more race-meetings to conclude the present season. The name of Affectation lias been chosen for the yearling colt by Kil- | broney from Simper, and Bose : Wreath for the yearling filly by Kilbroney from Christmas Bose in J. T. Jamieson’s Opaki stables. Since the Otaki Meeting Lady General has been on the easy list at Opaki. Mr G. L. Stead has leased from Mr J. B. Beid a two-year-old chestnut filly by Sunny Lake from Showano. The youngster is a half-sister to the South Island-owned Kilbrogan. Died in Auckland recently, “Bill” Stanley, well known in Hawera in the 90’s as the owner of Sartoria and other good horses. Irish names are all the <! go’’ now. For those not up in the lingo, it may be explained that “Chappal Mob” only means “good horse,” while Mahgoloire stands for “good enough.” Of course you all know “Polthogne.” Jockster Dave O’Shea, who has been an inmate of a Palmerston hospital since his bad smash there some months ago, was able to return to Auckland this week. He is one of our most promisng lads, and it is hoped that he has “used up” all the bad luck that is coming to him for some time. The Auckland horseman. S. Henderson, lias been granted e passport, and will leave for Sydney shortly to ride Olueoot and John Bunny in their engagements over there. Gluepot lias been awarded list 2]b in tho Grand National, to be run at Flnmington. Marc Anthony is at present being hacked on the roads at Biccortnn, and is to be put into work again shortly. It is reported that the Yarco horse is quite sound at present.

As the name Ladylove was not al-

lowed for the yearling filly by Sanqu-

har —Nantes. Mr C. Dnlgety has now claimed Nantville for her. end the filly by Nassau—Stardancer has boon called Starland. The gelding bv 'Martian—Disdain has been named Debuff, whilst the Nassau —Prim gelding will be known as Primum. Turangapito has made a good recovery from the kick he received at Otaki. and is at present doing steady work at Ellerslie. The failure on the flat usually ends up at the illegitimate game. This is the' fate of Hopfield. the muchboomed ’Stralian that “broke” nearly every, track tout in Auckland. Hopfield was always a good track horse, and it is not surprising to hear that he is a good jumper. He has the ability, but. as the religious papers say, “the flesh is weak.” The tail end of' a season sees the usual number of “positively last appearances” of horses on the racecourse, and prominent retirements this year include those good horses Kilboy anp Balboa. The writer knows of dozens of others that might be retired, but hope springs eternal iu some owners’ breasts ! Arch Marella, who was sold to Mr Sam Hordern • for loOOgs the other day, is a colt by Marble Arch—Sentonella. Pie was bred in the Auckland district, and was named Marella as a youngster.' His ’Stralian owner preferred a double name, and the colt appears to have turned out one of the speediest of the Marble Arch brigade to date. Naupata was dead lame when sent to Dunedin, but he took off both hurdle races in easy style, and returned home —still on three legs. AYhat o happy hunting ground the south would he for a useful horse like Paul Moore! Thanks to the exertions of Cathedral Chimes, who won £2l-30 in stake •money. J. Bryce comes out on top in the list of winning owners of trotters, for the present season, with the fine total of £2185. Other owners well up in the list are : —M. Edwards. £1956. T. Dae £1425.
