TRAGEDY CROSSING THE BAR,

AUCKLAND, May 5. The steamer Rimu, from Hokianga, was crossing the Manakau bar this morning, and was overtaken,, by a heavy sea, which completely enveloped the steamer, only the masts showing above water. Mr Gash, chief mate, and a seaman named Howland Christian, were on the boat deck. The latter was swept overboard and almost certainly has been drowned. Gash escapted by climbing into a boat on the davits
