FIRE AT KAIKOURA.
O HOTEL AND FOUR SHOPS DESTROYED. Press Association Telegram. KAIKOURA, March 11. A fire which broke out at 4 o’clock on Sunday morning resulted in tho destruction of Shield’s Adclphi Hotel, Hessent’s billiard rooms and barber’s shop, Mrs Stirling’s refreshmentshop, A. J. Whitehead’s jewellery shop and Strange Bros.’ drapery establishment. F. Flowers’ establishment was saved by a brick. wall and a manual fire-extinguisher. Whitehead’s united loss is about £IOOO. Messent was uninsured; his loss is about £SOO. Mrs Stirling was insured for about £IOO. Other insurances were not ascertainable. The morning was calm, or the loss would have been much greater. The fire originated in one of the shops. FURTHER DETAILS. Press Association Telegram. KAIKOURA, March 11. The Kaikoura fire destroyed the Adelphi Hotel and the premises of Messent (tobacconist and billiard saloon keeper), Mrs. Stirling (confectioner), Whitehead (jeweller), and Strange and Co. (drapers). The fire started at the back of Messent’s, and quickly spread till checked by a brick wall between Strange’s and Flowers’ store. Messent and’ Whitehead were uninsured, the latter estimating fils loss at £IOOO. . Mrs. Stirling was insured for £IOO in tlie North British office and Strange and Co. for £IOOO in the London Liverpool and Globe, and £ISOO in the Yorkshire office, besides various smaller sums. Air. Shields, licensee of tho Adelphi Hotel, had liis furniture and personal effects insured for £l5O in tho Guardian office..
