MEAT FOR BUTCHERS.
NEW ARRANGEMENT ANNOUNCED.
Arrangements have been completed by the Board of Trade whereby, from January 17, all butchers in the Dominion -gdl be entitled to obtain frozen ana other meat from freezing freezing works at the Imperial purchase rates without the addition of storage charges. - The scale rates to the retailer range from 4!d per lb for first quality wethers, S-J-d per lb second qualitv, from 6-|d per lb for lamb, 5d per lb for prime ox beef, 4-Jd for second quality, 6§d for mutton legs, and s§d for other portions of the mutton carcase. There is a fairly big disparity between scale wholesale prices and those charged retail, but it has been shown that a large amount of money has to be paid by tlie consumer for the service of cutting up, retailing and distributing meat in tlie small quantities required by the average purchaser. Hie Board of Trade does not intend to fix minimum prices for retail at present, but as it is well informed regarding these points, no doubt action will be taken if an undue profit is put on by the butchers.
