SURVIVORS REACH PLYMOUTH
VESSEL’S GALLANT BUT HOPELESS BATTLE. CREW LATER CAPTURED BY MOORS. (Received Feb. 4. 8.10 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. -4. The survivors of thq Woodfield have reached Plymouth. They recount that a German submarine attacked the steamer fourteen miles east of .Gibraltar, peppering her with shells. The steamer’s guns were manned, but the submarine was able to keep out of their range and continue firing. The submarine was twice hit. Captain Hughes and other officers of the Woodfield had a narrow escape. The Arab firemen deserted . the stokehold, and the chief engineer stoked for two hours until a shell burst in the stokehold.
-When eight of the crew had boon killed and 14 wounded, the captain, realising that further resistance was : hopeless, took to the boats and .abandoned the ship, the submarine torpedoing her. The crew reached the North African coast and the Moors captured them, but released them on payment of a heavy ransom.
