GISBORNE GAOL.
INSPECTED BY MINISTER OF JUSTICE. CERTAIN IMPROVEMENTS ESSENTIAL. Hon. A. L. Herdman, who left for Wairoa at II o’clock yesterday' morning. paid a visit of inspection to the Gisborne gaol yesterday morning. Seen by a pressman the Minister stated that he was not altogether satisfied with the condition of things at tlie gaol, where certain improvements were essential. The institution required enclosing in a proper fence, and lie intended to instruct Mr Hawkins, of the Prisons Department, _ to visit Gisborne with a view to seeing what was necessary. The Minister said he was in favor of prison labor being utilised on town improvement works, .such as the beautifying of the beach. Before leaving Gisborne. Mr Herdman took a motbr spin through the town, and viewed the site of the new hospital. The Minister, accompanied •by liis private secretary (Mr Pnulton), Commissioner Cullen, and Mr Alf. Warbrick, (Government Tourist) Guide), set out for Wairoa hv motor car at 11 a.m. yesterday. The party intended to break the journey at Morere, and go on to Wairoa last night. .% ; •Mr Herdman is due back in Wellington to-morrow night.
