GISBORNE CATHOLIC SCHOOL DANCE

AN ENJOYABLE FUNCTION. No better or more brilliant ball than that held at the Scottish Society’ Hall last night has taken place this season so far. It was in aid of the funds of St. Joseph’s, the local Catholic School. The capacious interior was excellently’illuminated and there was an attendance of considerably more than 200 couples who found that the floor, after being used for a time, lends itself admirably (for tr|e purposes of dancing. The music was by Messrs Vita Bros.’ full orchestra, and nothing more fjineful to waltz to could be desired. The M.’sC. were Messrs F. Lowndes, J. Martin and 'Weston. Plain or fancy dress was optional, and while the majority appeared in evening attire, numbers of the dancers wore strikingly novel and original costumes. A female Tommy Atkins paraded in true soldierlv fashion, while the wearer of Highland kilts and '‘bushy” did Scotland due credit, and mermaids. Zingaras, fair firefighters, Dutch girls, and blushing colleens graced the floor while soldiers, sailors, brigands, admirals, jesters and numberless other creations took part. It was a dazzlingly pretty display and everyone present appeared to extract the maximum amount of enjoyment. The general arrangements were satisfactory tb a degree, which fact was reflective of much credit on the ladies’ committee and the joint secretaries, Misses Neill and C. Haughie. Palms and other decorations were gratuitously supplied by Mr Alex. Thomson.
