A POPULAR PRESIDENT

PRESENTATION TO MR. W. PETITE. . A surprise was sprung upon the popular president of the Gisborne Bowling Club (Mr. W. Pet-tie) at the annual meeting of the club last night, when Mr. J. R. Kirk, on behalf of the members, presented him with a handsome silver-mounted bowi-bag, suitably inscribed. In making the presentation, Mr. Kirk referred to the zealous work Mr. Pettie had put in for many years as the president of the club, and’to the self-sacrifice he had shown in its interests. They understood Mr. Pettie was going to take a trip Home shortly, and he would, therefore, have many opportunities of ' using the gift. Mr. Pettie had the esteem, respect, and confidence c-f the members, and the gift was made in a spirit which they knew he would appreciate. On rising to respond, Mr. Pettie was received with cheers, “For He’s a Jollv Good Fellow” being enthusiastically sung. Mr. Pettie said that the interest of the club fo r many years past had been very dear to him. Living as he did next door to the green,"' he had rflmost come to look upon it as his own property. Since he had been freed from public cares, he had been able to give more time to the club. He coulcFassure them that there was no 1 danger of his interest in the club waning.
