WHANGAREI SMALL-POX SCARE
CASES DIAGNOSED AS CHICKENPOX.
PATIENTS NOW RECOVERING. B* TELEGRAM—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT] AUCKLAND, May 14. The outbreak of sickness suspected to bo small-pox or chicken-pox created great excitement in Whangarei, which was assuming somewhat or a panic to-day when nows reached tho town of a suspicious outbreak of sickness among the Maoris at Nukutawhiti and of a white man having been isolated at the same place. Steps were taken to got all of these suspects conveyed to Parakoa, where tho two sick Maoris who were tho original cause of tho scare are located. Mr C. McKinnon (Secretary of tho Hospital Board) this afternoon received word from Mr Shenton (Health Inspector) that ho had proceeded to Nukatawhiti in company with Dr. Monk. The two Maoris who had created all tho scaro in Whangarei through a medical declaration that they had small-pox, had been examined at Pakotai and found to have chic-ken-pox, not small-pox as originally stated. In fact they were getting better fast. It is anticipated that the cases reported from Nukutawhiti will prove to bo of-the same nature. A REPORT FROM WHANGAREI. [PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM! WHANGAREI, May 14. Dr. Monk, the officer of the Health Department, who came from Auckland in connection with the cases of tho two Mangakahia Natives, whose condition was considered to justify a suspicion of small-pox, has visited the patients at Mangakahia and has diagnosed their complaint as chicken-pox. The patients are now recovering.
