“PROFESSOR” MILLS AND MR J. R. KIRK.

By “The Trailer.”) Six', send you herewith a copy of tlio Education Commission’s report, together witli verbatim report (question and answer,) of tho evidence of each witness. As you are aware, the Commission had always with it at least two official reporters, and even every “passage at arms” was taken down and printed. Walter Thomas Mills, described as “a citizen of the United States, resident for the time being in New Zealand” gave evidence, and you will see tho same at page 648 of the report. His cross-examination appears at page 681 of the report, and if on. a careful perusal of the evidence you can say that it supports tho assertions made by the witness concerning me, or concerning the questions asked, I shall thank you to say so. On the other hand, if after a perusal no justification for the remarks of Mr Walter T. Mills is found, I will expect you to do me justice in the matter. Fortunately, tho people of Gisborne know me, and I trust they will know Mr Walter Thomas Mills better after you have given the certificate I am now asking for. If this is favorable to me. I do not think it will bo necessary to trouble further with tho gentleman in question. He should be very careful, before ascribing ignorance to others, to see that by so doing he does not disclose his own.—l aril, etc.,

® JAMES R. KIRK Gisborne, 12th Alay, 1913.
