(To tlie Editor.) ,-ms—As a follower of the good old game permit mo to enter a protest against the somewhat unfair report of Saturday’s game, Maori v. Pakelia, which appeared in the columns of Alonday’s “Times.” Tlie match referred to is the first of the season, and the bulk of the spectators —there were two or three hundred present—all unite in saying the game was a good one and well W.Qrth watching. I *" afraid your reporter if. a sad pessimist and can see 110 good in the game as played in Gisborne. The report is doubly unfortunate at the present juncture as it gives likely spectators during the season a wrong impression of what they may expect to see on tho Domain,'and in addition disheartens tho Rugby Union and the players themselves. It seems to me, sir, that you err on the side of severity, when you should do your best to “boost” the game, and give praise and credit- where they are rightly duo. This spirit of continual criticism is to be deplored, and especially so when tho criticism is palpably unfair and not according to facts. Rugby enthusiasts in Gisborne are themselves making a bold bid to bring the game more prominently before the public and to raise the standerd of play, whilst the Rugby Union arc helping the movement in every way possible. 1 would suggest, sir,' that your reporter attempts to “keep on the sunny side,’ and leave the pessimism and _ its attendant evils to others; he will thus both benefit tho columns of your journal, and help along the great national game of Rugby.—l am, etc.,
