ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS.
A STOKER’S END. [press association telegram.] TIMARU, May 11. An inquest was held yesterday morning into the death of Arthur Heading, aged 45 rears, of London, a coal trimmer on the s.s. ZealandicThe evidence showed that on Thursday, when descending the stokehold, Heading had nearly reached the bottom of the ladders when he slipped and fell, striking the edge of an iron door with his head and sustaining such injury to tlie skull and brain that lie died in the hospital on Friday. ; A verdict was returned of accidental death. Deceased had stated _ that he had had some beers before goiim down, and the ladder was dangerously slippery. AN OLD WOMAN'S DEATH. WELLINGTON, May 11. Jane Hall, aged 76, an inmate of the Homo for the Aged Needy, died on Friday night. She bad had a paralytic stroke some time ago and another on Friday, but had recovered from this some hours before death occurred. Tho medical officer of the Homo is not prepared to give a certificate, so an inquest will be necessary. THE DROWNED PRISONER. INVERCARGILL, May 11. Tho body of Frank Peterson, the prisoner who was drowned in the Estuary on Friday afternoon, was recovered on Saturday.
