SWIMMING.
GISBORNE CLUB’S CARNIVAL
There was a large attendance at the Gisborne Swimming Club’s carnival which was held at the school baths last evening. A most interesting programme was provided, including exhibitions ot' life-saving and not a little interest was added to the carnival by the presence of a team from Napier. Sir James Carroll was present and extended a very hearty welcome to the visitors and wished them a very happy time. He also spoke on the benefits of life saving and hoped that the Gisborne Life-Saving Club would succeed in every way.
Hollowing are the results of the various events:
Loelcie Cup, for schoolboys, over two distances. —2oyds : Fitzmauriee i, U ridge 2; time, 1 "sees. oOyds: Uridge 1, Fitzmauriee 2; time of-secs. It was decided that each should hold the cup for 6 months. Relay Race. —Gisborne (W. Carroll,
V. West, V. Cooling and II Wills) 1. Napier (N. McCartney, A Stevenson G. Melvechnie and R. Chisholm) 2 Time: G 1 secs.
Diving Competition.—Wills 1, Stevenson 2.
D. iS. Thompson’s Inter-Club Handicep. —Ist heat, Melvechnie 1, Menzies 2; 2nd heat. West 1, McCartney 2; final, West 1, Menzies 2. Time: 74 sees.
IT. J. Crieve’s Inter-Club Handicap. —lst heat. Amner 1, Wills 2; 2nd heat, Lloyd 1, Carroll 2; final. Wills 1, Lloyd 2. Time : 35 2-osecs. Mr N. McCartney gave his famous Monte Christo dive, being tied securelv in a sack fully clothed, and diving into the water, reappearing in a bathing costume. Cotton waste thoroughly soaked in oil was attached to the sack and set.fire to. He was loudly applauded for his great feat. Mr H. M. Bauekope also gave exhibitions in diving.
Tlie Napier life-saving crow will give an exhibition of life-saving with the reel on the Waikanae beach at 2.30 to-morrow afternoon. A “smoko” will he held in Wootton’s Looms tin’s evening.
100YDS. RECORD BROKEN. [PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM 1 AUCKLAND. Dee. 20. At the Waitennita Swimming Club’s carnival this evening M. E. Champion won his heat in the 100yds. event in 61 4-osees., breaking the New Zealand record of 63 2-osecs. held by Brice. Champion swam second in the final in the same time.
The race was timed by four competent men, all their watches agreeing.
