DANGER TO HEALTH.
BUILDING TO BE DEMOLISHED. To yesterday’s meeting of the Waikolnx County Council. Dr. Chest-on, District Health Officer, reported as follows : “Inspector York, reporting in connection with a case of enteric fever at Te Karaka. states inter alia: The whare where this outbreak occurred is owned by Airs Alark Peri, the patient’s grandmother. It is a very old, tumbled-down shanty, and comprises a kitchen and sleeping-room. It is built on the side of a hill, as shown by the sketch, and Mrs Parkinson says that in winter time it is always very wet. Airs Parkinson also informs me that her father, Alark Peri, died here with typhoid fever, and two of her own children had typhoid here, last year. The water supply is a small hole dug out of the side of the hill, and this fills by gravitation or drainage from the hillside.
“I am,” said Dr. Chesson, “of opinion that the condition of this dwelling and the site on which it is situated render it insanitary and dangerous to health, and that your Council should issue a requisition to the owner to have the place pulled down, specifying that no subsequent building he erected on this site. I understand that there is a good site on the top of the hill, behind the present one, and anv sound timber which may be found in the present structure could he used in the erection of a new building on this new site. If such building is erected, provision should be made for a water supply by means of tanks. I enclose condemnation certificate for the existing structure.” The Council decided to have the dwelling destroyed.
