GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP.

THE OPENING ROUND.

SOME EXCITING CONTESTS AND NOT A FEW SURPRISES.

Saturday afternoon saw the opening of the Poverty Bay Golf Club’s charm pions'liip tournament, and, as was only to be expected, there was a large gathering of enthusiasts present on the links to see the opening round. A stiff nor’-wester had to be contended against, w.iilc the. greens were much faster than they have been for months past, and these factors upset the calculations of the majority of the candidates sufficiently to cause them to be at fault occasionally with their approaches against the wind. The following are the results of the day’s play:— G. M. Dodgshun beat W. Gibson, 6 up and 4 to play. P. H. Hamilton beat W. R. Barker, 2 up and 1. J. Howie beat R. U. Burke, 3 up and 2. A. Paku beat IT. Simson, 4 up and 3. W. H. Irvine beat E. Adair, 2 up. E. M. Hutchinson beat F. H. W. Traill, 1 up. N. Bull heat J. IT. Bull, 3 up and 2. P. Keiha beat G. W. Willock, 2 up.

The principal surprise of' the day was the defeat of F. H. W. Traill by E. M. Hutchinson. Traill has been acknowledged to be one of the strongest players in the club for some seasons past, and has been knocking hard at the championship door for the past two seasons. Last season he defeated G. M. Dcdgshun in the semi-final, and put up a fine fight with G. W. Willock in the final. He was considered by many to be certain to make ns strong a bid for the honor tins year. It can be readily understood, therefore, what surprise was expressed when word travelled round the links that E. M. Hutchinson, of Waihuka, was hotly contesting every yard of the journey, and that it was a toss up as to which would win out. News of the stern fight caused quite a little crowd to follow the pair, and they were rewarded by seeing one of the finest games of golf which lias ever been played locally. Traill was one np at the turn, but the Waihuka representative squared the game bv taking the 10th in 5 to 6, and placed himself 1 up at the 11th with a good sto 6. Traill then took a hand, and recline- off a couple of fine 4’s- at the 12tli and 13th got in front again Hutchinson played sensational golf at the next hole, ‘‘The Knob (510 vards) He got in a perfect drive with the wind, and followed this up with a remarkable brassie second, which actually placed hi moreen -highHe annexed the hole in o to 6, and the pair were all square again. The fifteenth was ha ve.l m. 5 and the short “Railway’ hole (the 16 th) proved to bo the deciding point of the mine. Hutchinson made no mistake here? and with a 3 to 4 got one up. ’ "All-But” and "Home” hole. weFe halved in 4 and 5, and Hutch,n----«on thus won a very fine fight, in which the golf had been of a high standard throughout, by 1 up.

Seine idea, of the form displayed will be gauged from the cards, which were as follows; — Hutchinson — Out—6 4 5 G G 5 3 3 7—4.) In —5 5 5 5 5 5 3 4 5—42 87 Traill— Out—4 5 4 5 5 5 4 4 7—43 In -6 6 4 4 6 5 4 4 5—44 ' . . 87 By defeating such,a strong opponent ‘in so brilliant a manner, Hutchinson proved that he is one of the best players in the district. Both men-wwere congratulated on the fine golf they had played. THE OLD AND THE NEW. The old adage “Youth must be served” does not always hold good in golf, as in other games. This was exemplified in the meeting of G. W. Willock, the present champion, and P. Iveilia, who has frequently held the honor in the past. The pair had a great battle on Saturday, in which the veteran cilmo out triumphant by 2 up. Iveilia was 2up at the turn, and the ~ime finished with that margin in Ills favor. Both men played good golf, but were good te each other in the matter of missing rather easy nutts on occasions.

THE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. A consolation championship tournament was also started on Saturday lor players who had failed to quality for the senior championship. Sonic good games were seen, and a groat deal of interest was taken in the matches. The results of the first round were as follows :

B. C. Jeffreys beat A. R. Watson. W. A. O’Meara beat Balfour A. D. Murray beat Thorne George. I. B. Smith heat Moore. H. Bennett beat C. de Lautour. Spillsbury heat Grant. _ W. B. "Willock beat C. Morgan. F. W. Nolan beat P. O’Meara. Brewster beat A. L. Muir. AT THE PAVILION.
