COLD WEATHER IN THE SOUTH
SNOW AND SLEET AT CHRISTCHURCH. [PEE PKESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 4. Alter a couple of clays of bright, sunny weather the conditions changed back _to real winter on Saturday morning. A sharp fall of the barometer indicated the approach of westerly weather and before daybreak there was just- a. tint of nor’-wester, but the wind blew up from the southwest and the temperature fell rapidly.
There were heavy showers of rain and sleet during the morning, and just at noon came a light fall of snow — too light to lie.
Tile medo-st snowstorm lasted about -5 minutes and gave place to rain, but at intervals more snow fell and shortly _ after one o’clock the flakes came big and thick and fast. However this storm also soon closed. The weather remained cold throughout the afternoon with frequent light falls of snow.
Later on in the evening heavier falls occurred.
