ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES. [per press CHRISTCHURCH, Dee. 10. The number of persons who arrived in New Zealand during last October is 3169, while there were 2366 departures. The figures for October, 1910, ■were: Arrivals 3441, departures 2124.

Young and the Wellington section of tile Australasian Federated Seamen’s Union was resumed before His Honor the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) yesterday. The plaintiff alleged that by the action of the defendants he had been deprived of his employment as ship’s cook. Ho claimed £l5O damages, and also an injunction restraining the defendants from committing such, action in the future. At yesterday’s hearing Mr P. Levi appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr C. R. Dix for the defendants. His Honor hoard evidence and legal argument, and then intimated that lie would take time to consider his decision. Judgment would probably be given on Monday.

HELPER QF THE POOR. WELLINGTON, Dec. 9. Sir John Kirk, founder of the Ragged Schools’ Union in the Old Country, who is now visiting Australasia in the interests of the poor children educated in these schools, with a view to ascertaining if there is any opening for them in these countries by immigration, was giien a civic reception in the Mayoral chamber of the Town Hall yesterday. IMMIGRANTS BY THE TOXGARIRO Tlio Tongariro arrived from London early this morning, with 36S immigrants. She leaves for Dunedin this evening.
