WIFE SOLD FOR A SHILLING.
MINER REPENTS A SORRY BARGAIN. English files just to hand state that a husband at Stavely Town has made a sad mistake. By a rash offer he sold his yvife for a shilling. The buyer and the husband were in a local hotel,’ when the wife entered and tried to persuade her husband to go home. He might have gone, but some of his friends joined their entreaties to hers. This so incensed him that he ejaculated, turning to one of them, “Does tha want ’er? Tha can have ’er for a boh.” The offer was promptly closed with, and the woman changed hands.
Since the affair the husband has repented his sorry bargain, and has made repeated attempts to win the regard of his lost spouse again, but she prefers the neyv order, and is obdurate and apparently content. The husband has invoked the aid of the guardians of the police, but has met yvith little sympathy in that quarter. Both men are miners and old friends.
