CRICKET.

TOKOMARU v. GISBORNE ELEVEN. The Tokomaru team played the tliird match of their tour at Victoria Domain Yesterday. Play commenced at 1 o’clock. J. A. Bowman captained the local eleven, and decided to bat on the good wicket on winning the toss. The weather was intensely warm, and the bowlers and fieldsmen had an arduous time in the unusual heat which prevailed. Hallamore and Scroggie were tho opening batsmen, and gave their side an auspicious start by putting on 61 for the first wicket. Both men met the bowling with the full face of their blades, and came down 1 heavily on anything short or overpitched. The batsmen played most attractive cricket, and were frequently applauded for fine strokes all round the wicket. After scoring 28 in excellent style, Scroggie was sold by the pace of a ball from Skitch, who was bowling exceptionally well, and was out l.b.w. Lang did not last long, Skitch displacing Ins timber after he had scored 4 Bowman joined Hallamore, and the pair earned the total briskly along to 97, when Bowman, who had batted brightly foi his 20, was clean bowled by Skitch. Armstrong joined Hallamore, who had .thoroughly wanned to his. work. anti piling on the runs by sound and forceful strokes. .Armstrong quickly got,! going, and another good partnership put on 40 runs. With the total.at 137, Armstrong, who had run up

attractively, got his leg in front. to Reed. Hallamore, joined by W. MacDonald, tlie Motu.colt, continued to display fino batting form. With His score, at 74, the burly United captain mishit W. Oates, and the ball went up over the wicketkeeper’s head. J. Oates,, the stumper, did not know where the ball had gone, and missed a chance of Taking an easy catch. Tlie let-off did not make any difference, however, as Hallamore turned the next ball smartly into the slips, and Connelly snajipecl it up. The batsman had given a fine display of attractive cricket, marred by a chance in tlie slips when about 30, and he was heartily applauded on returning to the pavilion. The remainder of the batsmen did not give much trouble, and tlie innings closed for the respectable total of 190. Skitch, Reed, and W. Oates secured the wickets, and bowled well in the trying heat, the former, in particular, sending down some very fino overs. The long, spell in the field seemed to have demoralised the Tokomaru batsmen, as they completely collapsed on going to the wickets, ' and the whole side succumbed to the bowling of Armstrong and Hallamore for the poor total of 72. Reed and Moore were the only men to get going, and both showed that the howling was not so deadly as it appeared. Both Armstrong and Hallamore kept a good length, and made just the variety of pace and style to prove effective. Both sent down eleven overs, and,, came out with flattering averages. Owing to the balloon ascent taking place on the ground during the afternoon, there was a much larger attendance of spectators than is usually seen at local matches.
