GISBORNE'S SANITATION.

[To the Editor.] Sir, —While the subject of the future sewerage ami drainage of Gisborne is being carefully discussed, and as that discussion must necessarily be prolonged, would it not bo well'it the Borough Council would carry out tlio pan system properly? Coining as a stranger to this town, with some considerable experience ol sanitary matters, I have been very disagreeably impressed by the inefficiency of the existing method for the removal of nightsoil and garbage. The single unsealed pan placed in any sort of privy which a householder choses to erect, with the inevitable nuisance, and even danger, to public health arising from such methods, appears to me to be quite out of keeping with the advancing prosperity of this town. With the population at its present figure, and until it reaches 10,000, the double-sealed pan system, with disinfection and tarring of the pans would meet tho needs of the town. As it may be years before a complete system of sewerage is carried out, cannot the Council at least provide an efficient double pan system? I have no doubt that this matter has been brought forward before this, but it may interest the public to 'know how the matter strikes a stranger coming into the town from the outside world.—l am, etc , “SANITARIAN.”
