A SHOCKING CASE.
BRUTAL CRUELTY TO HORSES. Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH. Fob. 18. On Saturday night someone, who had scon cruelty inflicted on a team of horses being driven between hero and Okato, told tho police .ivlnit they bail seen, and on Monday Constables Alelvor and Rowlands watched for the. waggon coming into town. When they saw it, they ordered the driver to stop, and the police examined the live horses There was only one sound horse in the team, and lour oi the poor brutes were totally unfit to he used. Their shoulders were unsightly, with cruel protruding sores, and one horse in particular was m a slate tliat makes ones feelings revolt, as the collar and some sacking were besmeared with blood and sickening matter. The police arrested tho driver, Stanley Woolrulge, <>l Okato, and had the horses placed in stables. This morning Wooldridge was brought before the Court, and charged with cruelty to, and _ illtreating the lour horses, hy driving them whilst they were suffering from sore shoulders. Accused pleaded ■milfy. Tho Court examined flic horses, and His Worship, Air. H. S. Fitzherbert, expressed his feelings on the matter, hy denouncing the case ■is one of the worst he had known. Sentence was deferred, and accused was remanded to appear on the 24th iust., when his father, W. H. Wooldridge, of Okato, will be subpoenaed to appear. The Court ordered that the horses should be turned out in a paddock, and not used until they were well. Accused was allowed out of custody on his own recognisance of £2O.
