SAD DROWNING FATALITY.
A HEROIC DEATH. Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Feb. 17. James Spencer, aged 23, was drowned at tile Bluff on Saturday endeavoring to save Geoffrey Buchanan, aged about 12 years. Buchanan got out of hLs depth, and called for help, and a man went in, but could not swim, and failed to roach the lad. Spencer then went after the boy, who clutched him round the uec'k, and both went down, but only Buchanan came up. A fireman from the s.s. Orari dived, and recovered Spencer’s body, but too late.
THE INQUEST. Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Feb. 17. At the inquest on Spencer, who was drowned at Bluff in trying to save the boy Buchanan, the jury found that he was drowned in a heroic effort to save fife, no blame being attributable -to anyone, and they recommended that the life-saving efforts of Daniel Johnston, Alfred Towner, and James Price he made known in the proper quarters for some fitting acknowledgment. The jury also recommended the erection of a noticeboard warning that the beach was dangerous for bathing, and that lifebuoys be placed in a convenient position.
