SLY GROG-SELLING.
ANOTHER CONVICTION. Press Association. WELLINGTON, Eeb. 17. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day Charles Clarke, alias James Clarke, was charged with unlawfully selling beer to Leslie Roy Capp, a probationary constable, on 20th January. William John Dunn, a probationary constable, stated that he, in company with another probationer, was living at the Paragon boarding house, "for the purpose of detecting sly-grog selling, if any occurred there. On tlie 2Gth January, witness noticed defendant taking persons to a certain place opposite his bedroom window. Witness, accompanied by Capo, the other probationer, went down and obtained a bottle of beer, and Capp paid Is Gd for it. Air. Toogood, for the defence, stated that the accused had bought beer, and bad given it away, but on no occasion had he sold beer. Mr. Riddell, S.M., fined defendant £5, in default 14 days’ imprisonment.
