BOWLING.
(By “Toucher.”) Alembers of the Turanganui Club are looking forward to tlie opening of their green next Thursday, and given favorable weather there should be a good gathering of bowlers. The rinks are looking splendid, and a good season is being anticipated. Pending the opening of their green, a number of members of the Turanganui Club are availing themselves of the invitation of the Gisborne Club to play on tho Kaiti green. Among these I have noticed Alessrs. Skillicorn, Ratcliffe, AVilliams, Colley, Deverv, Bennett, Gaudin, Nasmith (jun) Hal-lain, and Neill, but their form is open to much improvement. Practice .is being consistently' indulged in by' tho Gisborne members, and though some are doing good work, form does not seem to have yet been struck by r the majority of the players.
Some of the new members of the Gisborne Club are getting to work in good style, and with coaching should turn out good bowlers. Of the colts I fancy Collins will turn out well. I noticed Air. Churchward, of Wellington, on the Gisborne green. He is a splendid skip, and a keen enthusiast. His theory of aNo _l’s pay is to lie a foot or two behind, the jack," with No 2 to draw. Most skips desire tho No 1 to put his first bowl on the jack and his second behind tho “kitty,” and placing his No 2 where desired. Anyhow, Simon’s driving last Saturday did not avail against Churchward’s Skipping. There are several familiar faces missing from the Gisborne green this season. Air. McGowan, (tho genial Alac) has so far not put in an appearance. I hope to see him yet again soaring his “toucher.” '"“Monte” Craig lias also disappeared from the links, having joined the Benedicts’. Tho Club can not- afford to lose such a. splendid drawing and driving player, and I trust that bowling will yet claim him hack again. Air. Nicholas is another whose face is missed. “Nick” has gone to Australia. "Without. doubt ho was the best drawing sliot on tho green, and tlie.representativo teams will miss him greatly. 1 notice that Air. J. A. Lucas lias joined the Gisborne Club, while still remaining a member of tlie lurantranui. ' I hear ho has made a donation of a garden seat to his new club. . , . . , Air. Gaudin has thrown m Ins Jot with the Turanganui this season, although still a member of the older club. He will be an acquisition to tlio young club, and will give them such a, skip as tho club is m need ° f ’l notice there is a suggestion for a larger contingent of bowlers from Auckland to visit New South AA ales than that originally determined on. All I would say isLet them go, tho more the merrier. The Neu South Wales bowlers, I expect,, aie netting in good practice, for., tlion climate allows them to follow their pastime for nine months in "the yea. Whether the New South W ales style of both feet on the mat will interfere with the New Zealanders play is doubtful, but, at any rate, the tnn™ should do justice to Ken Zealand Bowling.
