THE TURF.

THE C. J. C. MEETING. CUP PROSPECTS. (From Our Sjiecial Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH. October 24. AVe are now a little moro than a week off the opening of tho Canterbury Jockey Club’s Spring Carnival, and interest in the meeting is growing. Upwards of thirty North Island horses are now tin tho scene, and with the local lot, there aro sixteen New Zealand Cup candidates in work at Ricearton. There is plenty to engage the attention of tho track watchers. The most interesting gallop witnessed this morning was over a mile and a quarter, those taking part being Master Delaval, Elevation, Alaliuta, Lapland, and Probable. The lastnamed'a ml Alahua made the early'running but in the straight Master Delaval and Flevation drew away and finished together, two lengths in front of Alaliuta, with tho other pair some distance away. blaster Delaval and Elevation finished well and their d - play was pleasing. Alaliuta tired and Lapland and Probable found tlie company rather select. The time 2 min. 11 sec. showed that tho pace was solid.

Armistice just heat On Gander over a mile and a half in 2 min 42 sec, but it was not an attractive gallop. Maniapoto started with them" but only lasted seven furlongs, when he retired. Ho appears a long way below his form, and can have no chance in tho Cup. Bucclough covered a mile and a half in 2 min 40 i secs. Ho was not ridden out, but being a free worker, it is doubtful if he could have done much better. Paritutu was going well at tlio end of a mile and a quarter, which occupied 2 min 12 2-5 sec. The other Cup horses wero restricted to easy' tasks. So far as the Stewards Handicap was concerned there was nothing of special interest in this morning’s track work. Several hatches of two-voai-okls were sprinted down tlie straight on the course proper. Armlet showed herself to be a very- brilliant filly, while another Ahnldhurst youngster, in Sweet Angelus also went in taking style.
