THE MEIKLE CASE.
PROMPT ACTION PROMISED. Press Association. WELLINGTON, last night. In reply to a deputation from tlio Meilde committee, which waited on him to-day, the Premier said it was on i of the fine sides of nature to see a committee working on behalf of a man whom they" considered had been wrongfully sent to prison. He thought it was proper to give effect to tho recommendations of the Com-
mission, and he intimated that legislation was being prepared with the object of liavingNMeikle’s name deleted from the criminal records. The amount of compensation was a diffieu'l one to determine, but-it was’being inquired into by the whole of the Ministers. He did not wish-sto ref’.ec' 1 on tho Commission’s rteport in aay way, but 119 said it contained matters which made the task of the Government in this direction a difficult one. Probably a determination would bo arrived at in the next fortnight, and he would let the secretary of the committee know the result.
