The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. THURSDAY, JULY 25, 1907. THE CASE OF MR. LLOYD.

Some of our correspondents writing on the Chinese question have, evidently- approached the abovo subject under a distinct misapprehension. -Mr. AV V Lloyd, the young gentleman who is touring the Dominion in the interests of the Anti-Chinese League wa-' certainly asked to hand in his resignation as a member of the tourist Department because of Ins action in convening a public meeting on its behalf, but ho does not therefore claim consideration as a persecuted individual. In his addresses down South Mr. Lloyd has been at especial pains to disabuse the public mind oi an/ suggestion that because ot lus dismissal he has a grievance against the Government. On the contrary, Mr. Lloyd admits having broken the regulations under which he was working. and under the circumstances the Minister in Charge had no option but to call upon him to resign. Whether or not the regulations which prohibit civil servants from taking an active part in political gatherings are in the best interests of the community is another matter, hut while in existence they must lie complied with. Far from attempting to pose as a martyr, Mr. Lloyd has publiily expressed his appreciation of the attitude taken towards him by the Government and the head of his Department. He has virtually been promised another position at the conclusion of his anti-Chinese campaign, and has received personal wishes for success from the Premier.
