'* There can be no question but Lake Wai karemoana aDd it 3 tributary streams are fast fci comiDg the premier fishing waterß of Maoriland. The Wairoa Harbor Board must be getting its " back up ” against absent members, when leave of absence is refused. Mr H. G. Webber has completed the deviation of the Waiioa Opoutama telegraph line, and is uo>v tngrgod dismantling tho old line from Wairoa via the beech.

A special meeting of the Wairoa County Council will be held on Friday, 31st inst., in consequence of the last two meetings having lapsed. At Messrs Dalgety and Co.’s sale at Storlford Lodge on the 14th inst., a good line of wethers, bred and fattened by Mr W. A. Neale, Tapui, Waikoremoana, brought the top pr ce, being sold to Mr E D. Collison for 16s Bd.

Mr J. S. Buckland reported having held a. most successful sale on Saturday last in Poyzer’s yards. There was a large attendBnoß, and bidding for sheep and cattle of a good class was animated. There were 1700 sheep and lambs penned, and 70 head of oattle. The whole of the sheep were sold, but 40 head of yearling oattlo failed to C ach the reserve £2 10a,though £2 2s was offered, and were consequently passed in. A large party of natives from Opatiki arrived last Saturday week to hold a tangi over a woman who died about a year ago. She was the wife of a man named Poutahi. '• • Two horses came to an untimely end a few days ago in a singular manner. One belonging to a Frasertown resident, being somewhat blind, walked over a steep bank, aid broke its neck. Tho other horse followed, and met with a similar fate.

Mr Jefferson has taken over Mr George Walker’s Nuhaka property. Mr Walker intends to remain at Nuhaka.

If the Government possess the strong desire that they aie credited with to advanoe the interests of people resident in the back blacks, there is one’other direction in which they might show it; and that is by establishing more money order offices. Settlers litiog at a great distance from a money order office find it very inconvenient at times to send away small orders or pay small accounts. Frequently cheques havo to be written for larger amounts than aro required, and the balance sent back, say in stamps. The people of Waikaremoana distriot, including settlers and tourists, are very muoh hmdicappod in this respect.
