On Thursday afternoon the Gisborno liawn Tennis Olub’o oourts wore tho scone of an animated concourse of enthusiastic players and admirers of the game to witness the semi-final of the Men’s Handioap Doubles, in which Mossrß Burke and Hawley opposed tho ex and present ohom’C pions, Messrs'A. W, Koes and W. J. Barlow. The latter pair, who have oomo through all tho previous rounds conceding*] the vory liberal naudlcap of owe 40, tippeered to have suffered somewhat from this olass of play, os their efforts in tho first sat woro vory much below the form they were expected to show, Barlow’s overhead strokes never reaching a more dangorous aspect than in _tho u®t or just out of court, whilst Boos looked altogether out of foim, and their opponents played with tho greatest care,taking no risks, and thus won the set, 6—. Tho seoond set brought about a more interesting game, resulting in a win for Bees and Barlow by 6—5. The thiri set more than recompensed tho spectators for their attendance, as the veterans appeared to have changed their tactics, driving and playing everything with the greatest confidence. Indeed Bees has never been seen to better advantage at the net, making outright winning hits from Barlow’s orOßs oourt servioc, winuing the final sot 6—o, thus winning the matoh by 2 sets fco 1, completely outclassing Burko and 'Hawley, giving them no quarter in any department of game. Mr T. A. Coloman acted as umpire in au efficient manner, whilst Messrs Sainsbury and W. S. Coleman filled tho post of linoamcn
