THE WOOL SALES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, Jan. 22. At the wool sales competition is brisk, and all classes are firm at the opening rates. Wellington, last night. The Agent-General eubles under date London, January 21st“ The wool sales are proceeding. The present series includes 37,000 bales of New Zealand wool. Competition is very keen. The chief feature of tho market is the demand for crossbred wool. Fine crossbred advanced |d, medium crossbred :jd, coarse crossbred id. Brices for merino are about the same as at tho last sale, or slightly bettor.” At tho wool sales to-day good clean crossbred fetched up to sjd. A little fine merino brought up to 7-id, and superior lumbswool 7d.

GISBORNE WOOL SALES. Messrs Williams and Kottlo (Limited) report: —“Wo held our salo of wool and skins this afternoon. Our offering consisted of 304 bales, 33 pockets, and 32 bags of wool, 15 packages of tallow, aud 18 sacks of bones. There was a good attendance of buyers lrom Auckland and Napier, as well as the usual local buyers. Uutsido bidders were Messrs Kearsloy

(Murgatrc-yd Bros., Auckland), Warnock (Auckland), Bourke aud Leovors (Napier), while local buyers were represented by Messrs Smith aud Arnold. Brices showed a considerable rise on last sales, in sympathy with recent reports from London. Nearly the whole of tbo catalogue was cleared at very satisfactory prices, all sorts being id to ijd up on last sale, Strong crossbreds made from 4jd to sid, according to the quality and condition. No half-bred wool was included in our catalogue. Lambs’ wool was in strong demand, and for bright parcels 5d was realised, while short and dingy was sold at 4d to 4£d. Locks and pieces were very keenly competed for, good pieces fetching 3jd to 3:jd, whilst locks brought 2£d to 2jd for a very well-picked lot. Tallow in tins made up to 81s. Taking the sale all through, prices were very satisfactory indeed, and the sale was tho most successful that has beou held here for some years.” Messrs Common, Shelton and Co. report ; —» There was a full attendance of Auckland, Napior, aud local buyers at our wool salo this afternoon. Bidding was brisk and prices showed an upwarl tendency. We quote : Crossbred fleece 5 jd, pieces 31-d to 3jd, locks and crutchings 2i(d, good station skins 41 d, medium 3|d to 4d, inferior 2jd to 3d.”
